Today's Women's History Month spotlight is Patrice Cleary, owner of Purple Patch and newly opened Joia Burger which just held their grand opening event on March 6th.⁠ ⁠ Patrice Cleary was born in the Philippines to a Filipino mother from Bicol, and an American father from Massachusetts. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was still a baby. Early in life Patrice realized that the kitchen and food was a way for her mother to hold onto her identity. She soon found herself right alongside her mother helping her prepare dishes for family and friends and then catering for big parties.⁠ ⁠ Taking a leap of faith and believing in herself, Patrice and her family opened Purple Patch, a Filipino-American restaurant on March 17, 2015. She has dedicated most of the menu to her mother’s recipes and Filipino cuisine. ⁠ ⁠ Patrice opened Joia Burger on March 6, 2024. Joie Burger specializes in burgers, fries, and ice cream. The name Joia also Harkens back to Cleary’s childhood. She lived for a while in the Azores, Portugal, where she raced horses. The name of her first horse was Joia, meaning joy.⁠ ⁠ #WomensHistoryMonth⁠ #WHM⁠ #granopening

Today for Women's History Month, we highlight Téa Ivanovic from @ImmigrantFood ⁠ ⁠ Téa Ivanovic is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Immigrant Food, America’s first gastroadvocacy restaurant group that integrates innovative gastronomy and social advocacy. Immigrant Food has three locations in the DC area, and has received notable recognitions (e.g., Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas in 2019) for its innovative cause-casual model of incorporating a social advocacy component into its business model since inception. Previously, Téa was a commentator at Altamar, an independent international affairs podcast. Her professional career includes creating and implementing strategic communications for international policy and politics at a Washington D.C. think tank, and global financial matters at a financial public and media relations firm. Téa was the first Washington Correspondent for Oslobodjenje, one of the oldest and most prominent news outlet in the Balkans. She was born in Belgium to parents from the former Yugoslavia and recruited to the United States by Virginia Tech’s Division 1 Varsity tennis team. She graduated with a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In 2022, Téa was named on the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 List, Washington Business Journal’s 25 Women Who Mean Business, FSR’s 40 Restaurant Stars on the Rise, and DC Fray’s 8 Trailblazing Women in Hospitality.⁠ ⁠ #WomensHistoryMonth

As we end Black History Month and begin Women's History Month, we would like to highlight Khalid Pitts and Diane Gross. ⁠ Husband-and-wife owners, Khalid Pitts and Diane Gross opened Cork Wine Bar in the Logan Circle neighborhood on January 29, 2008 in its original location at 1720 14th Street NW. ⁠ ⁠ Cork immediately received recognition by winning the RAMMY⁠ for Best New Restaurant, and was a James Beard semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant. They expanded in 2009 by opening Cork Market & Tasting Room just up the street, then consolidated as Cork Wine Bar and Market in 2017, in its current location at 1805 14th Street. Cork further expanded in 2021 by opening Cork Spring Valley in northwest DC. Through the years, Cork has regularly been recognized as one of the best wine bars in DC.⁠ ⁠ #BlackHistoryMonth
